Volunteer Outreach

Diocese of LA

Greetings!,

All Saints' Annual Meeting will be held this Sunday, February 23, in the Church.  If you've never been to one of these meetings, it's a little hard to describe: the serious business of church life is done there, yes, (see below for nominations to Vestry and other posts) but it's also a special chance to come together with your church family to hear and see what God has been doing in this community over the past year.  Where you can learn what our budget looks like, but also stand and tell someone that you've appreciated all their work this year, and hear others do the same.

This meeting is so important that we don't have an 8 a.m. service so that regular 8 o'clockers will come at 10 a.m. instead, and stay for the meeting.  After business is concluded, we'll enjoy a beautiful buffet lunch, catered by parishioner Connie Lindberg.  Those who have tasted Connie's cooking will know that's more than enough reason to stay!

I look forward to seeing you this Sunday: please try to join us.

Mardi Gras comes to All Saints!

Lent is soon upon us. In fact, Ash Wednesday (which marks the beginning of Lent) is March 5 this year. For centuries Christians have marked the transition between the season following Christmas and the beginning of Lent in various ways, including the celebrations of Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras. Neither of these observances are liturgical holidays, but have, nevertheless, found their way into the cultural life of Christian Communities.

Join us tonight, Wednesday, February 19 after Eventide, at 7:15 pm in the Parish House, when we'll unpack the history, tradition and meanings of these transitional celebrations, which immediately precede the Lenten season.

Next week, Wednesday, February 26, we'll party at 6:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall after the Eventide service with a dinner in the theme of Mardi Gras. There'll be Cajun food, great Mardi Gras decorations and music to match.

Mark your calendar, as you'll not want to miss these fun and informative events.

 Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper

6 p.m.    Tuesday    March 4

All parishioners are invited to a drop-in pancake supper on Tuesday, March 4.  Shrove Tuesday is traditionally celebrated as a day to use up rich, fatty ingredients before the fasting season of Lent: with eggs, milk and sugar to use up, pancakes were a popular dish to make.

Volunteers will be serving up pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausages from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Parish Hall, please drop by and mark the end of Epiphany before we start Lent with Ash Wednesday the following day.  A donation of $5 per person ($15 max for families) is suggested.

Please note that there will be no supper on Ash Wednesday, March 5.

 Ash Wednesday at All Saints

12 and 6 p.m.    Wednesday    March 5
"I invite you, therefore, in the name of the Church, to the observance of a holy Lent."

With those words as a part of our Ash Wednesday liturgy, we all are invited to mark time in a different way in the coming days. The Lenten season begins with our Ash Wednesday services on March 5, 2014.  We celebrate that day with two services.
  • At noon, we will gather at the Church for a traditional observance of the day, including the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.
  • At 6 p.m., the Ash Wednesday liturgy will be incorporated into our regularly scheduled Eventide service, and will also include the imposition of ashes and Holy Communion.  In a break with the normal Wednesday evening schedule, there will be no dinner following Eventide on Ash Wednesday.

Please join us at either noon or 6 p.m. as we enter into this most sacred season of Lent.

 Newcomers Brunch

11:30 a.m.    Sunday    March 2

A Newcomers Brunch will be held after the 10 a.m. service on Sunday March 2 in the Parish House Living Room.  There will be presenters on various aspects of our church life and a chance to get to know some more members of the parish, including the clergy.

Please contact Sally Messerlian by email or at 805-455-6890 to RSVP so we know how many people to plan for.  We are glad you are here!

 Spring Parish Social

5:30 p.m.    Friday    March 14
All Saints' Parish Socials have become legend for our church.  We've experienced amazing hospitality at a variety of homes and experienced first-hand God's blessings.

Please join your All Saints family at the home of Padric and John Davis on March 14 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.  Please be sure to RSVP to [email protected]. Direction cards are available at the Information Table on Sunday.

Our Inheritance, Our Church and Our Children: Planned Giving Workshop

10 a.m.    Saturday    March 15
Wouldn't it be sad if our wishes for disposing of the bounty God has given us were frustrated because we didn't make a prudent estate plan? On Saturday morning, March 15, the Heritage Society is sponsoring a workshop with the Rev. Richard Schaper, Certified Financial Planner and former gift planning officer of the Diocese of California, to help us consider creative and prudent steps we might take to best accomplish our wishes for our loved ones and our church.

One of our greatest acts of stewardship toward our loved ones and our world is thoughtfully arranging, now, a tax- and fee-effective way to give away all that God has given us-- what the Book of Common Prayer declares to be a "duty" of love for those whom God has given to us. Please join us in the Parish Hall at 10 a.m. for this fascinating and surprisingly entertaining workshop, and for a delicious luncheon with Fr. Richard to follow.  Please RSVP to [email protected].

Beginning March 2, after Family Feast, All Saints will present God, Music and Fun, a music education series for children and families.  Through the media of singing, dance, rhythm activities and playing musical instruments, we will learn the stories of God's saving work in the world through the art of music.

Geared toward early elementary and elementary age children and their families, monthly classes will be held immediately after Family Feast in the Parish Hall on the first Sunday of each month.  No advance sign up is necessary, just come!

We need your help.  One of the instruments we'll learn on is the guitar and each student will need one.  We would like to gather several loaner guitars for students who do not currently own one.  Do you have an acoustic guitar that you would be willing to donate?  Please either bring it to the Church Office or contact Steve O'Connor.  Please note, we will use only acoustic (i.e. not electric) instruments for our classes.

Old Tech Welcome at All Saints!

Have You Upgraded to the New iPad Air?  Have an Old iPad to Donate?  Or Maybe a Digital Camera?

All Saints and the Parish School are looking for an older iPad to use to accept credit card payments on the patio, at events and for special functions.  It can be any generation and have any size of memory and does not need to be 3G (but it's fine if it does).  We are also in need of a digital camera and digital video camera.  Please be in touch with Robbie Boyd if you have some technology to donate.  Remember that any donation of this type is tax deductible.

 In Memoriam: Barbara Sawyer

11 a.m.    Saturday    March 1
Parishioner Barbara Sawyer will be remembered at a service at All Saints next Saturday, March 1 at 11 a.m.  You can read Barbara's obituary on our website.
